visual evoked potential study in multiple sclerosis disease
Authors
abstract
purpose : to demonstrate visual evoked potential (vep) changes in multiple sclerosis (ms) disease methods : a case series study of vep changes in forty-nine patients with definite, probable and possible diagnoses of ms referred to electrophysiology ward from january 2002 to december 2005. pattern vep was done for those with good visual acuity (va), and flash vep was done for those who did not have central fixation or good va. characteristics of p100 wave in pattern vep and p2 wave in flash vep were evaluated. results : the implicit time of p100 and p2 waves in pattern and flash vep, demonstrated severe abnormalities in 84.5% of definite ms. in probable ms, implicit time increased in 81.8% cases. in possible ms cases, increased implicit time was seen in more than 50% of patients. decrease in amplitude alone, was seen in a few cases. combined changes of implicit time and amplitude were prominent. conclusion : vep is an invaluable electrophysiological test in ms for both diagnosis and follow-up of the patients. concurrent with magnetic resonance imaging (mri) and cerebrospinal fluid (csf) analysis, vep can help neurologists and ophthalmologists for better evaluation of ms patients. iranian journal of ophthalmology 200921(4):37-44 © 2009 by the iranian society of ophthalmology

Visual Evoked Potential Study in Multiple Sclerosis Disease
Purpose: To demonstrate visual evoked potential (VEP) changes in multiple sclerosis (MS) disease Methods: A case series study of VEP changes in forty-nine patients with definite, probable and possible diagnoses of MS referred to electrophysiology ward from January 2002 to December 2005. Pattern VEP was done for those with good visual acuity (VA), and flash VEP was done for those who did not hav...

purpose: comparison of the results of visual evoked potential (vep) in time domain and frequency domain between multiple sclerosis (ms) suspected patients and normal indivisuals. method: eleven ms suspected patients with normal visual findings and 20 normal individuals were tested by vep. results were compared between two groups. results: the time domain results showed no significant difference...
full textoptical coherence tomography versus visual evoked potential in multiple sclerosis patients.
background: optical coherence tomography (oct) is a non-invasive instrument, which can be used to estimate the thickness of the retinal nerve fibre layer (rnfl) and provides an indirect measurement of axonal destruction in multiple sclerosis (ms). the main aim of this study was to find out any correlations between p100 latency in visual evoked potential (vep) and rnfl thickness. methods: the p...
full textThe Effect of Oral Verapamil on the Visual Evoked Potentials in Definite Multiple Sclerosis Patients
Introduction: Ionic channel rearrangements through the demyelinated axons or supporting media play significant role in remission of the neurological deficit in MS patients. In this study the effects of Verapamil as a calcium channel blocker on central conduction have been investigated through the evaluation of changes in P100 latency of the visual evoked potential. Method: This randomized doubl...

Background: Visual evoked potential (VEP) is regarded as a useful, reliable and non-invasive technique for the diagnosis of lesions in the optic pathway. This technique was used to investigate visual function in migraine. Materials and Methods: 53 migraine patients (27 migraine cases with aura and 26 common migraine cases) and 55 controls were prospectively enrolled in this study. Visual ev...

Visual evoked potential (VEP) abnormality is widely used as an objective indication of visual pathophysiology in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis. One major limitation of this test is that VEP abnormality is not specific to multiple sclerosis. In an attempt to explore ways of making the VEP test more specific, changes were measured in VEPs caused by superimposing upon the VEP stimulus either...
